This is the story of the Santa Clarita Sharks, an inspiring team that has created a community for kids with ASD. The Special Olympics offer many excellent programs and the Sharks are but one example of these inspiring teams. What warms my heart about this video in particular is the way that it shows the team as being a community within itself, how nobody feels excluded, and everyone gets to have fun.
David Payner, a player on the team, says that before he joined the Sharks, “It was hard for me just to get friends… I had no one to talk to just because I had autism and stuff. Now I came here, I can talk to people that are just like me, that have the same things.”
Everyone involved with the Sharks is an important part of what turns this team into a community: from the understanding coaches, to the parents cheering them on. Every time a kid scores a basket, they are met with at least one high-five and the enthusiastic support of their entire team. Watch this video to hear from the team members why they love being a part of the Sharks!Whizzco
