Sensory overload is a common issue for people that have autism, and may make it difficult for them to travel to busy and loud places such as the mall, convenience stores, or festivals. Sensory overload occurs when one or more of the body’s senses experiences overstimulation from the environment. When faced with an environment that may cause you to feel overloaded, it triggers a fight or flight response. You either explode into a temper tantrum or your brain shuts down because it is too overwhelmed. Here is one person’s take on how it may feel to walk into a Walmart if you have autism.
