6. Recognize Eye Contact Can be Hard

It’s not uncommon for autistic people to hate making eye contact, but that’s not because they don’t care about you. For many, it’s extremely overwhelming, distracting, and even painful to meet another person’s eyes. So if your partner is looking at everything but you, don’t take it personally or assume they’re not listening. They likely are.

5. Be Sensitive About Changing Plans

For neurotypicals, changes of plans can range from wonderful to frustrating; for some autistic people, it can be devastating due to their aversion to change. Avoid canceling or changing plans if possible, but if you must, break it to them as early and gently as possible and, if you can, work together to find an alternative plan.
