Communication is an essential aspect of any relationship, platonic or romantic, but it’s especially important when your partner is autistic. People on the spectrum tend to take things literally, and thus they often don’t catch subtext, subtle hints, figures of speech, meaning behind tone, sarcasm, or nonverbal forms of communication like body language and facial expressions. Think about how things can get lost in translation when you have a text conversation without emojis—that’s what it’s like for autistic people.

Ensure that your communication is as straightforward and direct as possible. If you want them to know something, say it—don’t hint it. This also extends to physically intimate situations, too, by the way.
