12-Year-Old Boy With Autism Graduates High School, Attends College In The Fall

Monty Hernandez is not like other 12 year olds. He is already graduating high school this May and starting college at Arizona State University in the fall.

Monty started junior college when he was just nine years old, and is dual-enrolled at Skyline High School and Mesa Community College.

He is currently enrolled in physics and pre-calculus, and has been accepted as a biochemistry and pre-med major at ASU. He has big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon one day.

While Monty is extremely smart and taking classes that a high school senior would normally take, there is also something else that sets him apart from his peers.

Monty was diagnosed with autism and a heart condition when he was very young. From age three to five, he was in speech therapy and special education, but when his IQ test came back with a high scoring number, they knew he was gifted.

Monty has always loved school and learning new things. When he wasn’t reading a book, he was spending his time working on science and math projects.

Due to him being so gifted, he was able to skip grades when he was younger, which is how he ended up in such advanced classes.

Although Monty is so young, he will be the first in his family to go to college.

He is so excited to be an ASU Sun Devil and start his new college journey.
