Would you believe Miss Montana, Alexis Wineman, is a face of autism?
Believe it or not, this beautiful young woman walked on the stage in 2012 to compete for Miss America with confidence, charm, and great sociability after living for 11 years without an explanation for her various struggles. She was finally diagnosed as being on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum (more specifically, she has PDD-NOS, which stands for Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified).
Watch as Alexis describes what it was like growing up not knowing why she wasn’t able to relate with others, experienced unexplained tantrums, and spent hours by herself.
But today, after finally being diagnosed, Alexis and her family have taken big steps in making her life as normal as possible and not letting autism stop her from reaching her dreams.
Alexis, while you were not declared Miss America, you still won the pageant in our books!Whizzco
