“Even in ordinary times, food insecurity in American households is an important problem, and unfortunately COVID-19 is amplifying that stress significantly,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.
Due to job loss and uncertain times, more people are going to food banks for help. However, food banks saw donations decrease as the coronavirus decimated the economy. Thankfully, celebrities and wealthy individuals have been stepping up with large donations to help those in need.
Bezos wrote, “Non-profit food banks and food pantries rely in large part on surplus food from a range of food businesses. For example, many restaurants donate excess food. But during this time of social distancing, restaurants are closed, and many other normal channels of excess food have also shut down. To make matters worse, as supply is dwindling, demand for food bank services is going up.”
Jeff Bezos just announced on Instagram that he donated $100 million to Feeding America, a large nonprofit that feeds millions of people at 200 food banks nationwide. He posted, “Feeding America will quickly distribute the funds to their national network of food banks and food pantries, getting food to those countless families who need it.”
“There are not enough words to express how grateful we are for this incredible gift. It will make a tremendous difference for the millions of our neighbors who are facing a future that feels uncertain – and to our network of food banks and pantries on the frontline of the #COVID19 pandemic across the nation. Thank you, @jeffbezos,” commented Feeding America.
Feeding America posted on their Facebook page, “Hunger in America is growing at a rapid pace. We estimate that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Feeding America network of food banks will need an additional $1.4 billion.” Bezos contribution and all the others from celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio are helping, but their goal is to make sure that no one goes hungry.
ABC and Feeding America created a video to encourage people to help over 37 million people who do not have access to nutritious food.

Feeding America wanted to recognize all the people on the front lines making sure that people are fed. They posted, “Right now, the Feeding America network of 200 food banks are working around the clock to make sure communities are staying full and safe. To the food bank staff, truck drivers, and volunteers making this work possible – thank you. Your hard work is so important, especially during this time of increased need.”
