As individuals on the spectrum reach adulthood, some of them may be ready to leave home completely, some may need some assistance, and some may remain with a caretaker or their parents their whole lives. For those who are ready to venture out on their own but not quite ready to live without built-in support, First Place is ready and willing to help. First Place is a nonprofit that develops new housing options for adults with autism and related disorders — and 29 Palms Apartments in Phoenix is their flagship.
Denise Resnik has a son on the spectrum, and is the founder of First Place. “Over the next two years, we will be able to build our program, recruit and train staff, and learn a lot from design, technology experiments, and so much more about how individuals with autism as adults develop their skills and more fully integrate into the community,” Denise says. “The units for First Place have been designed specifically for adults with autism in mind.” This includes panels that absorb sound and built-in furniture to create a sense of spaciousness and openness.
