When These Customers Bashed an Employee with Autism, The Restaurant Had The Best Response
A Manchester restaurant owner became the best boss ever last week when he took to Facebook to stand up for one of his employees. Grenache Restaurant’s owner and operator Mike Jennings recently added Andy Foster, who is on the spectrum, to the service staff of his fine dining establishment. Last Wednesday Mike was faced with patrons who demanded to know “what was wrong” with Andy, despite receiving good service. When they learned their server was on the spectrum, they didn’t want to be served by him, and further questioned why the owner would have given him a job at a restaurant like Grenache.
Andy Foster, who was diagnosed with autism 7 years ago, took a job at the restaurant to help support his mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. While Andy mentioned experiencing discrimination in the past, his confidence was shaken enough by the interaction that Mike and his partner, Kim, felt compelled not only to reach out to Andy, but also to take a stand via social media:
The post went viral, and has received over 24,000 likes and thousands of comments — from people with family members on the spectrum thanking the restaurateurs for their fair treatment of someone in the community, to previous diners acknowledging Andy’s superb service. The response shows that, despite their strong wording, they will have no problems filling their seats in the future!
