Therapists Suggested He Focus On “Life Skills,” But His Family Wasn’t Giving Up On His EducationC. Dixon
It’s a sad reality that people with nonverbal autism are often underestimated. People think that their inability to speak means they are unable to think, but that’s just not true.
This story, however, proves how awesome and intelligent people with nonverbal autism can be!
Ethan is a young man with nonverbal autism who was diagnosed when he was 18 months old. After that, he spent the next several years in ABA therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
When Ethan was ten, his therapists recommended that Ethan discontinue learning academics and focus only on life skills.
But Ethan’s parents wouldn’t listen. They refused to stop his education.
So instead, they decided to experiment. They discovered that Ethan was a visual learner, so they decided to home school him, tailoring his studies to his visual method of learning. And the result of that? Ethan started thriving!
