This dog in the viral video below must have this Bee Gees song in mind while comforting his fur mom. He couldn’t sing the lyrics, but his mom could clearly see just how much he loves her as he stared deeply into her lonely eyes.
True, dogs are such marvelous animals. They can sense our thoughts and feelings even if we don’t share the same language. They can even tell when we are sick and what ails us at times.
How do dogs manage to be in tune with their owners’ feelings and health? Health Insurance Fund of WA (HIF) offers the following explanation: “It is thought adult dogs have a mind similar to that of a human toddler when it comes to mental abilities, emotional intelligence and vocabulary. Studies show that dogs are sensitive to emotional contagion, which is responding to the emotions of another without understanding what they are feeling. Your dog knows you are experiencing poor feelings even if they aren’t sure how you feel, so they provide comfort.”
Dogs use different senses in recognizing a person’s and another dog’s emotions. Through these senses, such as seeing and hearing, they can have mental representations of negative and positive emotional conditions through a combination of various cues. Then, they respond according to their natural instinct as highly-social beings.
