Documentary-Style Dating Show ‘Love On The Spectrum’ Follows Autistic Adults Looking For Relationships
There’s a documentary-style dating show that you’re going to want to add to your watch-list, and it’s all about young adults with autism who are trying to find love.
“Love on the Spectrum” originally aired on ABC Australia in 2019, and the show will be available on Netflix for other countries in 2020. It’s available to stream in America beginning on Wednesday, July 22nd.
“Finding love can be hard for anyone,” the tagline for the show reads. “For young adults on the autism spectrum, exploring the unpredictable world of dating is even more complicated.”
The docuseries follows several different young adults on the spectrum who are ready to date or already in serious relationships.
“What is the most important thing in life? Many people would answer: LOVE. There is a common misconception that people on the autism spectrum are not interested in relationships or romance. From my experience, this simply isn’t true,” director Cian O’Cleary said. “In making television series about disability over the years, I have spoken to many young adults on the autism spectrum as well as families, job coaches, psychologists, and autism organisations. One thing really stood out for me: So many people on the spectrum were wanting to find love, but many had never even been on a date in their lives. When you speak to a large number of people whose main desire in life is to have a partner, and they haven’t even been on a date, something isn’t right.”
There are five, hour-long episodes in the first season. It follows seven single adults who are trying to find love. It also follows two already-established couples who are in long-term relationships: Ruth and Thomas, as well as Jimmy and Sharnae. Their success at finding love may serve as an inspiration to others.
The participants in the series get tips from a few different sources to help them handle the complexities of dating: “As well as help from their families, experts provide the love-seekers with practical skills to help them navigate what can be a confusing experience for anyone, giving them the confidence to begin their journey on the road to finding love.”
“I hope this series will start conversations, help bring about understanding and acceptance, and ultimately inspire people with autism, their families and society at large to find ways to help people on the spectrum find love,” O’Cleary told Entertainment Tonight.
O’Cleary also created “Employable Me,” an Australian series that follows people with autism or other disabilities who are searching for work. It is not available on Netflix at this time.
Hopefully “Love on the Spectrum” will offer insight and hope as well as entertainment to anyone who is uncertain about dating.
One of the participants in the documentary laments at the dinner table that, “A lot of people our age aren’t interested in commitment. They’re only interested in intercourse.” His response is met with knowing laughter from others at the table.
