Iconic Toy Store that Closed Is Back for the 2019 Holiday Season

Toy lovers rejoice! The beloved Minneapolis-based toy store Creative Kidstuff will be relaunching an online shop for the 2019 holiday season after closing down all its store locations earlier this year. You can check out the Creative Kidstuff collection at GreaterGood’s website here.

Creative Kidstuff has had a long history of promoting creative play, active play, and learning through a broad range of open-ended toys and games that promote creativity. The first store was opened in Minneapolis in 1982, more than 35 years ago, and it quickly became a local favorite. It hosted birthday parties and weekly book readings, offered awesome gift-wrapping, and soon branched out into eight locations and several holiday pop-up shops.

Many grown children have come back to tell Creative Kidstuff staff how the toys they received from this amazing company changed their lives and helped shape who they are. Some are young musicians who remember purchasing their first harmonica at Creative Kidstuff. Others are aspiring biochemists who were inspired by receiving their first science kit. All have been touched in a deep way by the gifts at Creative Kidstuff.

“The stories are endless,” says Becky Olk, senior director of business development for GreaterGood. “The memories and stories are vast and deep.”

However, Creative Kidstuff was forced to close its doors this summer when their business model became unsustainable. President Roberta Bonoff says the company was too large to thrive as a small local destination but too small to compete with big-box stores like Target and Amazon. Children’s play habits have also begun shifting from physical toys to video games and virtual experiences.

The closing of Creative Kidstuff has been a tragic event for countless families who once enjoyed gathering at their local toy store for events and discovering new creative and educational toys from a company they trusted. However, all is not lost for Creative Kidstuff fans this holiday season.

Now GreaterGood is excited to announce that children, families, and toy shoppers everywhere will have the opportunity to continue to shop at Creative Kidstuff in their relaunched online store. It may not be the same as a brick-and-mortar store, but it will give shoppers the opportunity to buy the same creative and educational toys they value for the children on their lists this year.

“Creative Kidstuff has meant so much to so many families over the years, including my own. It has been much more than a shopping destination,” says Tim Kunin, the CEO of CharityUSA.com and GreaterGood. “Roberta and the Creative Kidstuff team built an experience that encourages creativity, wonder and exploration. We are honored at GreaterGood to give kids and families an online opportunity to bring this experience, the best toys and gifts into their homes.”

Tim’s children are now 25 and 29, but the memories provided by Creative Kidstuff toys remain. “I’m glad we can continue to offer an assortment of toys which empower kids through play in a new online store,” says Tim.
