Thomas Karna was excited to spend his 10th birthday with the 70 classmates his mom invited to his party. The celebration was meant to be a big blowout bash to help Thomas ring in the double-digits. So when the family only received 3 responses back from those dozens of invitations, they knew Thomas would be heartbroken.
That’s when Thomas’s mother, Maranda, enlisted the help of a good friend, Stephanie Lovejoy, to make the party a success. Knowing Thomas loves motorcycles, Lovejoy started an event on Facebook and requested that a few bikers find it in their hearts to attend Thomas’s party and make his day. But she got a lot more than she bargained for.
On the day of Thomas’s party, hundreds of bikers came to celebrate with him. “When the fellow biker calls,” says biker Tammy Rosman, “we just show up.”
Each biker had his or her own reason for attending the party. “My son’s autistic, and I guess it broke my heart,” says biker Paul Inzeo. Julie Banaszak noted that “He’s just like any other kid—and he should be treated the same.”
The bikers quickly became the main event of the party and happily went for a motorcycle ride with Thomas and his dad leading the pack. No other 10-year-old has ever had a birthday party quite like this one!
“I just feel… I feel like I’m famous,” says Thomas.
Mom Maranda says this is the best surprise for Thomas that anyone could have asked for, and it has meant so much more to him than just having a good birthday party. “It showed him that he matters,” she says. “That he is important. That he is loved.”
