James Durbin

James Durbin finished in fourth place on season 10 of the hit reality show American Idol. In a recent interview with Dr. Drew, he talked about his experience on the show, and his life with Asperger’s and Tourette’s.

“I’ve gotten to see the effect that I’m having on people and on people’s lives − how I’m, you know, making them happier, or making them cry… conveying all these emotions through these songs,” James says. “And having Tourette’s and Asperger’s, and being open about it, has really allowed people to be themselves.”

Heather Kuzmich

In 2007, Heather Kuzmich was a contestant on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model. “It was a point in my life where I was thinking either Asperger’s was going to define me or I was going to be able to work around it,” Kuzmich told The New York Times of her decision to join the show. “At first I was really worried people would laugh at me because I was so very awkward. I got the exact opposite.”

Heather finished in fifth place and was voted as the viewer favorite eight weeks in a row. She helped bring autism to the public light in a very real way.
