Here’s What a Typical Day in a School for Autism Looks LikeAllison Espiritu
Being a child with autism is never easy, but it can be made a little bit easier when you’re around kids just like you. The ELIJA School in Levittown, New York, offers children with autism the opportunity to go to a school together with a staff dedicated to support them and their families’ needs.
In this video, you’ll meet Dustin, Talia, and Jake, all of whom are students at ELIJA. They each start their days in different ways. They have different functional abilities and different struggles. But when they come together at school, they can forget how different they are from other people and focus on learning.
School routines at ELIJA may look a little bit different from what you’d see at a typical school, but if you look closely, you’ll see that the programs these teachers have implemented in their classrooms have been a huge help to the pupils. They focus on life skills and communication skills to help students learn to be productive members of society and have the best lives they possibly can. For some, this may include living independently and working for a living. For others, these skills will help them form strong relationships and know how to ask for help when they need it.
Have you used any of the strategies implemented at ELIJA? Which ones would you like to try out in your home or classroom?
Watch as this video follows children attending ELIJA and what a typical day in their life consists of. The school uses science-based treatments and the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to get and give the most out of these children.
